Critical Analysis of Bowling Performance of Bowlers of Toyota University Cricket Championship 2013

The game of cricket has a known history spanning from the 16th century to the present day, with international matches played since 1844, although the official history of international Test cricket began in 1877. During this time, the game developed from its origins in England into a game which is now played professionally in most of the Commonwealth Nations. The international one-day game is a late twentieth-century development. The first ODI was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When the first three days of the third Test were washed out officials decided to abandon the match and, instead, play a one-off one day game consisting of 40 eight-ball over’s per side. It was for the 1st time in the history of India that eight best universities participated at TUCC 2013 Championship with electronic coverage all over the world. It was the best tournament organized for the Indian Universities players of Cricket. Keeping in mind that electronic and print media coverage of players will have significant effect on performance of university cricketers, the researcher felt a need to conduct a research study to critically analyze the bowling performance of cricketers of TUCC 2013 and in order to understand the patterns of bowlers being produced at university level. The purpose of the study was critical analysis of bowling performance of cricketers of T.U.C. Championship 2013.

Forty Cricket players i.e. top best five bowlers representing eight best universities of India namely, Jiwaji University, Gwalior; Jain University, Bangalore; Mumbai University, Mumbai; Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi; Vir Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur; Awadhesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa; Madras University, Chennai and Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, who had an opportunity to bowl in any of the match played at TUCC 2013 were selected as subjects for the study. These subjects were selected on the basis of their participation in TUCC 2013 held at four different venues namely Capt. Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior, Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai; M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore; Jamia Millia University Cricket Ground, New Delhi. The criterion variables selected for analyses of bowling patterns were as follow: 1. No. of overs bowled 2. Maiden overs bowled 3. Runs conceded 4. Number of Wickets taken 6. Number of No balls bowled 7. Economy rate The data pertaining to the bowling patterns of each bowler in terms of number of maiden overs bowled, runs conceded, wickets taken were taken from the website of NDTV i.e. www.ndtvtucc.2013. The data of each bowler was recorded from the YouTube for visual display in the bigger screen by using L.C.D. projector for analysis the bowling actions of bowlers. In order to analyze the data of each bowler of each team, percentage analysis technique was applied for calculating the economy rate, the total number of runs given by the bowler and number of overs bowled by each bowler.

The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Goribal has bowled 12 over in the tournament and took 09 wickets and conceded 72 runs, his economy rate was found to be 6. He did not bowl any wide and no balls. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. The second best bowler was Thakur who bowled 12 overs and took 05 wickets on a cost of 72 runs. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. His economy rate was 6. He had delivered four wide balls in his 12 overs bowling spells during the tournament. Dabholkar bowled 14 over’s over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he had delivered 3 wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Netravalkar bowled 14 over’s he took 03 wickets and conceded 78 runs, his economy rate was 5.57. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament he has delivered 3 wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. On fifth place, Jaiswal took 02 wickets in total 11 over on a cost of 73 runs, his economy rate was 6.63. He has bowled one maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that P. Jaiswal has bowled 12 over in the tournament and took 05 wickets on a cost of 101 runs with 8.4 economy rate. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He delivered one no ball and 3 wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was Nishad who bowled 11.3 over and took 02 wickets and conceded 80 runs, his economy rate was 7.07. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he had delivered 22 wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Guta bowled 10 over’s and took 01 wickets and conceded 82 runs, his economy rate was 8.2. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he had delivered 3 wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth A. Yadav bowled 03 over’s he

The analysis of above table clearly reveals that S. Gopal has bowled 18 over in the tournament and took 06 wickets on a cost of 108 runs, his economy rate was 6. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he had delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was Samarth who bowled 18 over and took 05 wickets on 96 runs, his economy rate was 5.33. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he had delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Shahiindra bowled 15 over’s and took 05 wickets on 94 runs, his economy rate was 6.26. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth A. Majeed bowled 14 over’s he took 04 wicket and conceded 85 runs, his economy rate was 6.07. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Verma has bowled 11 over in the tournament and took 11 wickets on a cost of 80 runs, his economy rate was 7.27. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament and he had delivered five wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was N. Tiwari who bowled 12 over and took 03 wickets and conceded 96 runs, his economy rate was 8. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament and he has delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Boudh bowled 6 over’s and took 01 wicket and conceded 53 runs, his economy rate was 8.83. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no or wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth Anil Singh bowled 11 over’s he took 01 wicket on 99 runs, his economy rate was 9. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament and he has delivered three wide 71 runs his economy rate was 9.86. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Ashwath has bowled 11 over in the tournament and took 04 wickets and conceded 58 runs, his economy rate was 5.27. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was K. Ksahyap who bowled 12 over and took 04 wickets on 89 runs, his economy rate was 7.41. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he had delivered one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Rohit bowled 10 over’s and took 03 wickets after giving 53 runs, his economy rate was 5.3. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no or wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth V. Kumar bowled 6 over’s he took 03 wicket on a cost of 36 runs, his economy rate was 6. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered three wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. On fifth A. Karansan, he bowled 09 over and took 03 wickets and he conceded 65 runs his economy rate was 7.72. He has not bowled any tournament. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Mavai has bowled 13.3 over in the tournament and took 09 wickets on a cost of 89 runs, his economy rate was 6.69. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was Dhaliwal who bowled 14 over and took 04 wickets and conceded 109 runs, his economy rate was 7.78. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Sikarwar bowled 05 over’s and took 03 wickets on 62 runs, his economy rate was 6.2. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth Dhaked bowled 12.3 over’s he took 03 wicket and conceded 82 runs, his economy rate was 6.66. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Ravindra Siingh has bowled 12 over in the tournament and takes 03 wickets on a cost of 41 runs, his economy rate was 3.41. He has bowled one maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered three wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was Manssor Ahmad who bowled 12 over and took 03 wickets and conceded 71 runs, his economy rate was 5.71. He has bowled one maiden over during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament and he has delivered four wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Ahmad Kirmani bowled 6.4 overs and took 1 wicket on 47 runs, his economy rate was 7.34. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He has delivered two no balls during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth Ahmad Kirmani bowled 06 over’s and conceded 55 runs, he did not took any wicket, his economy rate was 9.16. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no or wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. On fifth Rohit Saini he bowled 09 over and conceded 57 runs, he was also wicket less and his economy rate was 6.33. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Negi has bowled 20 over in the tournament and took 10 wickets on a cost of 93 runs, his economy rate was 4.65. He has bowled two maiden overs during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament and he has delivered five wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was D. Sharma who bowled 20 over took 10 wickets and conceded 108 runs, his economy rate was 5.4. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Chopra bowled 19 over’s and took 05 wickets on 116 runs, his economy rate was 6.10. He has bowled one maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered three wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth Ahmad bowled 19.1 over’s he took 03 wickets on a cost of 107 runs, his economy rate was 5.60. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. On fifth Chaudhary, he bowled 08 over and took 02 wickets, he conceded 41 runs and his economy rate was 5.12. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. The analysis of above table clearly reveals that Abhay Negi has bowled 20 over in the tournament and took 10 wickets on 93 runs, his economy rate was 4.65. He has bowled two maiden overs during tournament. He has delivered one no ball during tournament but he has delivered five wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The second best bowler was Deepak Sharma who bowled 20 over and took 10 wickets, he conceded 108 runs and his economy rate was 5.4. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. Third Chopra bowled 19 over’s and took 05 wickets on 116 runs, his economy rate was 6.10. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament and he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. Fourth Ahmad bowled 19.1 over’s he took 03 wickets on a cost of 107 runs, his economy rate was 5.60. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered only one wide ball in his bowling spells during tournament. On fifth Chaudhary, he bowled 08 overs and took 02 wickets, he conceded 41 runs his economy rate was 5.12. He has not bowled any maiden over during tournament. He did not delivered any no ball during tournament but he has delivered two wide balls in his bowling spells during tournament. The graphical representation of data is given in figure 1.

It is evident from the findings that best bowlers were from Jamia Milia Islamia of Delhi who have been rated and ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the basis of their bowling performance out of the 40 bowlers of eight best universities cricket team of India. This may be attributed to the fact that Jamia Milia Islamia have best cricket facilities of their own and have good coaches too. The third rank in bowling is of Jiwaji University, Gwalior and this may be attributed to be fact that there is possibility of genetic endowment of physique of bowlers in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh where very tall and well built male/female are found to be in this Chambal valley region. These bowlers have done so well in spite of having rural background and no modern ultra facilities in Morena District for cricket. Hence, it may be concluded that for being excellent in bowling in cricket there is a need to have genetic endowment, good facilities of cricket and highly scientific training and coaching in the field.

Within the limitations of the present study, the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. It may be finally concluded that the overall most effective three bowlers of the TUCC tournament 2013 were Abhay Negi and Deepak Sharma of Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi who took ten wickets each in 20 overs with 4.65 and 5.4 economy rate respectively. The third most effective bowler of the TUCC tournament was Prashant Mawai of Jiwaji University, Gwalior having taken 9 wickets in 13.3 overs only with economic rate of 6.69.

Goribal who had taken highest wickets with economic rate of six followed by Shardul Thakur who took 5 wickets with economy rate of 6 in the case of Mumbai University. 3. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Virbahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur was Mr. Pradeep Jaiswal who took five wickets in 12 overs and having economy of 8.4 followed by Gulab Nishad who took 2 wickets out of 11.3 overs with economic rate of 7.07. 4. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Jain University, Bangaluru was Mr. Shreyas Gopal who took six wickets in 18 overs and having economy of 6.4 followed by Samarth Ravikumar who took 5 wickets in 18 overs with economic rate of 5.33. 5. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Awadhesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa was Mr. Pawan Verma who took four wickets in 11 overs and having economy of 7.27 followed by Naveen Tiwari who took 3 wickets in 12 overs with economic rate of 8.00. 6. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Madras University, Chennai was Mr. Ashwath Sridhar who took four wickets in 11 overs and having economy of 5.27 followed by Kiran Kashyap who took 4 wickets in 12 overs with economic rate of 7.41. 7. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Jiwaji University, Gwaior was Mr. Prashant Mawai who took 9 wickets in 13.3 overs and having economy of 6.69 followed by Sohrab Dhaliwal who took 4 wickets in 14 overs with economic rate of 7.78. 8. It may be further be concluded that the most effective bowler of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh was Mr. Ravindra Singh who took three wickets in 12 overs and having economy of 3.41 followed by Mansoor Ahmad who also took 3 wickets in 12 overs with economic rate of 5.71.

1. It is recommended that sixteen best bowlers of this tournament may be selected by Toyota or NDTV or Ministry of HRD Govt. of India or A.I.U. Delhi for carrying out systematic training of these outstanding and potential bowlers of India. 2. It is also recommended that these players be provided best technical and financial support from their 3. It is also strongly recommended that NDTV and Toyota may take up universities games in same manner in other sports which needs to highlighted for their promotion. 4. It is recommended that a combined Indian Universities cricket men team be constituted to play matches with foreign universities every year and funding be provided by the Ministry of HRD/ Ministry of Sports or respective universities of each player. 5. It is recommended that these bowlers be provided biomechanic expert, sports psychologists, sports physiotherapist and nutritional expert for better training. 6. It is also recommended that NDTV be appreciated by the Ministry of HRD and Vice Chancellors of Universities for having provided the best facilities to these teams in the year 2013 during TUCC Tournament.
