Abstract

The word "charismatic" has the potential to conceal more than it discloses. Rather than shedding light on the matter at hand, what it does disclose is often more indicative of the cultural and historical milieu in which the term "charisma" was used. Here we provide an overview of the notion by following its development through time as it relates to gender, religion, and empowerment. Our investigation of the many interpretations of charismatic women in religious contexts brings us full circle to Max Weber's original concept of charisma and its following reinterpretations in the fields of social science and the humanities. This research article delves into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, examining how the idea of 'charisma' brought in both new possibilities and dangers for religious women.
