ABSTRACT
This study is a part of my Ph.D. research and included inmy thesis as chapter 3. This study presents an overview of the planningenvironment relevant to the command area under consideration. Specifically itconsiders the salient features of the irrigation project along with itsphysical setting, cropping pattern, geology, climate, ground water status andsocio-economic aspects. The constraints in utilizing the resources in thecommand area are assessed through discussions with project officials at variouslevels, interactions with farmers’ in the form of interviews using a structuredquestionnaire and available project reports. This helped to understand theexisting water management practices better and developed the basis forsystematic approach for the improvements of the system.
