Abstract

Making a livelihood is part of man’s existence. Povertyin a most general sense means that one does not make out as well as others oras well as one would have liked to. There may be many underlying reasons forpoverty. Poverty probably has always existed as a real phenomenon. But it wasthe international agreements drawn up at Bretton Woods towards the end of WorldWar II that spelt out for the first time that poverty was a world-wide concern(World Bank Reports, various years). The term “underdeveloped” world wasintroduced, later replaced by the more optimistic – but not necessarily morerealistic – term “developing countries”.
