Abstract

1,4-Butanediol isthe natural compound with the formulaHOCH2CH2CH2CH2OH. This colorless stickyfluid is derived from butane by appointment of alcohol groups at each endof the chain. It is amongst the four established isomers ofbutanediol. In its manufacturing synthesis, acetylene reacts with twoequivalents of formaldehyde to shape 1,4-butynediol.This type of acetylene-based procedure is descriptive of what is identified as"Reppe chemistry", after German chemist WalterReppe. Hydrogenation of 1,4-butynediol gives 1,4-butanediol.
