Abstract

Owners, architects and engineers are more worried about the sustainability and energyperformance of proposed buildings. Evaluating and analyzing the potential energy consumption ofbuildings at the conceptual design stage is very helpful for designers when electing the designalternative that leads to a more energy efficient facility. Building Information Modeling (BIM) assistsdesigners assess distinct design alternatives at the conceptual stage of a building life so that effectiveenergy strategies are attained within the green building constraints. As well, at that stage, designers canselect the correct type of building materials that have big impact on the building’s life cycle energyconsumption and operating costs. Although a large number of studies on Building Information Modeling(BIM) have been conducted in the past decade, a deficiency of consensus residue among researchersand practitioners regarding the applications of BIM for the development of green buildings, the activity ofcreating buildings in a way that protects the natural environment. As the usefulness of BIM has beenbroadly recognized in the building and construction industry, there is an urgent need to establish an upto-date synthesis between BIM and green buildings.
