The institution of local government has a long history in India. Evenin ancient India, there were various types of local government institutionsincluding Panchayats. But during the Mughal period, the local government unitsgreatly deteriorated. Even in the time of East India Company and during theearly British suzerainty, the local bodies decayed considerably.
